Stretch marks are an extremely common yet very unpleasant sight. They appear on your skin when it is stretched beyond its point of elasticity. Stretch marks can appear for many different reasons with the most common being pregnancy and rapid changes in weight. They can also be caused by stress, growth spurts, and genetics. Although removing stretch marks from your body may seem hopeless at times, there are many remedies that can help your skin heal and lessen the visibility of these marks.

Although there are prescription drugs and medications on the market for stretch marks, they are not always the best option for everyone. As with all medications, there are often side effects that can be harmful. If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, many of these prescription stretch mark creams are known to cause severe birth defects and problems in the baby. Fortunately, there are many natural remedies that are safer and in many cases equally as effective.

Beauty

Cocoa butter

Cocoa butter is likely the most widely known natural remedy for stretch marks. It is high in antioxidants and helps to soften the skin, restoring elasticity in the skin and greatly reducing the appearance of stretch marks. You can find cocoa butter at almost any grocer or drug store and displayed near lotions. Try to find a brand without too many other added ingredients. Some cocoa butter balms have chemical ingredients added that may not be safe during pregnancy or nursing. Simply rub the cocoa butter on your stretch marks twice a day.

Raw Shea butter

Shea butter has many healing and anti-inflammatory properties. It is best to use the most natural and unprocessed form you can find, like raw African Shea butter. Raw Shea butter can help reduce skin discolouration, making it a great choice for those bright red stretch marks that won’t seem to fade out. To use, rub it on the affected area once or twice daily.

Coconut oil

Coconut oil is an excellent moisturiser for the skin which can help restore elasticity. It is great for both reducing and preventing stretch marks. Coconut oil contains vitamin E, which is used in many different skin healing creams because of its rich benefits for the skin. Rub coconut oil on your stretch marks until it is absorbed by the skin daily for best results.

Potato juice

The use of potato juice to remove stretch marks may seem strange to some. Potatoes have many different vitamins and minerals that can help with skin restoration and foster growth of new cells. You won’t need a juicer, you can simply cut the potato in slices and rub a slice on the area where stretch marks are visible. Wait for the juice to dry completely before rinsing it off with warm water.

Raw sugar scrub

A raw sugar scrub can be used to exfoliate the skin and reduce the appearance of stretch marks. Try to find a natural, raw cane sugar rather than refined, processed sugar for better results. You can make your own sugar scrub by mixing the raw sugar with a little bit of coconut, olive, or almond oil and a squeeze of lemon juice. Rub this scrub on for about ten minutes before you shower each day.

Lemon juice

The natural acids in lemon juice can help with many skin issues including acne, injuries, scars, and of course, stretch marks. Just slice the lemon in half and rub the juice over the affected area for about ten minutes, then rinse it off with warm water. You can also add some lemon juice to a scrub or an oil.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is widely known for its ability to heal the skin from burns and other discomforts, and stretch marks are no exception. Aloe Vera has soothing and healing properties that can work miracles on your skin. You can purchase pure Aloe Vera from any natural grocer or you can slice open the plant yourself.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water is very important for healing your skin. Staying hydrated helps your skin to restore elasticity which can not only help your current stretch marks, but also can prevent future ones from appearing. Try bringing a water bottle with you wherever you go to remind you to drink more water throughout the day.

These remedies can be used in combination with each other. They are not medications, so there is no worry of adverse reaction when mixing remedies. Try a sugar scrub with coconut oil and lemon juice before the shower, and follow up with a lotion made with cocoa butter, Shea butter, and Aloe Vera afterwards. You should notice positive results within two months. Many times they start to fade within weeks. Remember, it took time for the stretch marks to appear, and it will take time for them to go away so be patient, consistent, and persistent to get the results you desire.
